Small space decorating is a challenge that we all face
when living in the city. This Spring, Queens Mamas is hosting a series of
articles to help you clean, unclutter, and decorate your home in ways that go
well in small spaces.
Baby gear, diapers, clothing, wipes, toys, and tiny socks
scattered around like rose petals can be enough to make you scream. Until your
baby can grow old enough to clean up after themselves (which may even be never)
there are some ways to help tackle the clutter and make their nursery a clean
and organized place to start their day.

If you are one of the lucky ones who actually have a room for your new tot then good for you ! I am not one of those people. I cram my tween, a nanny, the baby, and my husband and I into a 3 bedroom house that I like to refer to as “cozy”. This means that I have a crib in my room. If you do have a nursery however, odds are that you won’t spend much time in it for the first few months. Either way, here are some essentials for the first year to make your life a little easier.

Designing or redecorating your pre teens room is always such a task. Here are some inspiration and ideas for how to make their living space fun and cool.
Theme: Surfer
There are many ways to decorate without breaking the bank. Painting is my personal favorite but if you don't want to get that involved take a trip to your local party supply store and check out the stock of cool and cheap decorating elements for your tweens room. Target and Ikea are also old faithfuls when it somes to decorating on a budget but the key is to use a bit of discression and not buy everything from one store. Here are my picks for a surfer theme pre teen room.
Color Palettes
Wave Wall Mural
This mural sticks right to the wall like a sticker. It can be made as large or small as you like.
Grass Umbrella
Use as a canopy if the room is big enough and string some lights through it.
Colorful Sea Shells
These shells would be nice in jars through out the room

Decorating and Organizing Ideas
Kids and Tweens are very territorial about their bedrooms. For that reason I had to approach the idea of redecorating my daughter’s room with a bit of sensitivity. 1 gallon of paint, some IKEA shelves, a trip to Wal-Mart and 2 solid days of hard work and my daughters room was transformed into a “ Big Girls Room “. Here’s what we did.
My daughter is very attached to every paper clipping and mini eraser in her bedroom. For that reason we were not able to really purge right off the bat. Instead we put everything in clear recycling bags so she could see that we were not throwing things away and got all of the little stuff out of her room. Now we had some space to work. Our goal was to eliminate all of the pink in her room so I picked a nice sage green wall paint from Benjamin Moore. We bought the most expensive gallon ( 40$ ) because 1 coat did the trick over her entire room. It was well worth the dough.
