Hi Mamas! hope everyone is enjoying the week off between Christmas and New Years! Here are some things to be aware of in the coming week or so.
There is a potential school bus strike that could begin right after this holiday break. If your child travels by bus, make sure you’re in touch with the school. In the event of a strike, the city said it will provide MetroCards or reimburse parents who drive kids to school if they do not live near public transit.
You can catch a retro ride on the MTA Nostalgia Trains in Queens courtesy of the MTA before December 30th. The old-fashioned M train boards at Queens Plaza at 10:44 AM, 12:14 PM, 1:43 PM, 3:14 PM, and 4:44 PM. and they only cost a swipe of your MetroCard.
Looking to volunteer in the new year? The Family Support Network brings non medical advocacy to the Rockaway population and could use your help. The purpose of this program is to create a system under which people can get all kinds of advocacy from childcare and clothing to FEMA communication, housing, general wellness and legal services. The Family Support Network will provide non medical services by using the assistance of volunteers and trained professionals.
How it works:
The Family Support Network will put volunteers in touch with a family that has signed up for the program; the volunteers will then work directly with the family to bring them the resources that they need. As a volunteer, you will have access to our catalog of local and national resources from sitting services, volunteers, products, and services. We will fully assist you in providing these families with what they need. If interested in being involved please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
for more information.
The 2013 Astoria School Symposium will be held on January 12 to give families more time before kindergarten registration. The free event will take place at the Astoria Lutheran School and will feature local schools in the Astoria LIC area. This event is a great way for local parents to get free information about what is available for their child locally in Astoria and Western Queens. Please click here for more information.
