MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS EMERGENCY ORDER TO ESTABLISH ODD-EVEN LICENSE PLATE SYSTEM FOR GASOLINE PURCHASES TO REDUCE WAIT TIMES

Mayor Bloomberg signed an emergency order today to establish an odd-even license plate system for gasoline and diesel purchases to reduce wait times and lines at gas stations in the five boroughs, much like what NJ was doing almost a week ago.

The temporary odd-even system will begin Friday, November 9th, at 6am, and remain in effect until further notice. It will operate as follows:

  • Vehicles with license plates ending in an even number or the number “0” can make purchases of motor fuel on even numbered days.
  • Vehicles with license plates ending in an odd number can make purchases of motor fuel on odd numbered days.
  • Vehicles with licenses plates ending in a letter or other character can make purchases on odd numbered days.
  • Commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles, buses and paratransit vehicles, Medical Doctor (MD) plates and vehicles licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission are exempt.

Not sure what odd/even days mean? (I didn’t either) If your plate ends in an even number, you can get gas on days (going by the date) that are even. For example: Saturday November 10 is an even day, therefore even plates get gas. (Thanks to Linda Zwillick for helping us out on that one!)

Thanks guys! We’ve updated it!

Aliya says:

According to nyc.gov the days aren’t classified that way. It goes by the date. November 9th is an odd day, the 10th an even day, etc.

J-LA says:

um.

I think it has to do with the DATE.

so November 9th is an ODD day.

please check that and update if needed.
