The Poconos was once a booming group of 80’s ski towns and mountains with seasonal activities like skiing, rafting snow tubing, and horseback riding. Despite its sometimes cheezy reputation, the Pocono Mountains is still a great location to take your family and are located in Pennsylvania about 90 miles from Western Queens and is an easy 1.5 hour drive. There are several large resorts in different areas of the Poconos that are suitable for families but our family chooses the Fernwood Hotel and Resort for out stays here. Fernwood has a few different lodging options for families ranging from one and two bedroom villas to general hotel rooms. There are 3 indoor pools located throughout the grounds as well as a snow tubing hill, a game room, organized kids activities and 3 restaurants. Fernwood is not glamorous nor is it modern and flashy. What it is however is a large affordable resort to take your family with a laid back atmosphere and cheap fun. Each villa has a basic kitchen, washer dryer and dining table. The villas look much like a small house and you can easily fit a large family of four or more inside one of these rooms. During our most recent trip to Fernwood we stayed in a loft villa with 3 bedrooms a fireplace a Jacuzzi tub, kitchen, dining, and living room.
During the days we swam in the indoor pool and hiked and at night we took both kids tubing on the hills at the resort. There are two snow tubing hills for kids to enjoy. One is full sized and has a lift to take you to the top where kids and adults alike can speed down a huge hill screaming with joy all the way. There is also a small kiddy hill with little snow tubes for kids 33” and taller. Roxy called them the “wee” and we went down the small hill together. After tubing and hot coco you can hang out at the pub and have a laid back dinner (and drink) with the kids or Fernwood also has babysitting services that you can take advantage of and go to a local steakhouse.
If you are in the Poconos for a number of days the also be sure to drive to the Crayola Factory in Easton PA. There you will find 3 floors of crafting fun to be had from sampling new Crayola products like soft playdogh or glow markers or writing on the walls of a glass tunnel. There are also block printing, a chalk room, a glow in the dark drawing area and a toddler play area.
