Water Taxi Beach

IMG_5458 Today I decided to take my tween and her friend to Water Taxi Beach
for the first time. We drove down by the water in Long Island City and
parked on a desolate street. The two girls looked at me like I was out
of my mind, ” there is a beach down here ?” they said sceptically.
“That’s what they say” I said and we walked toward the large yellow
sign that indicated we were in the right spot. As we got closer to the
water we began to hear the sound of thumping house music and saw some
college kids making thair way out. I had a brief moment of ” what the
hell am I doing bringing 10 year olds to a place like this” when a
bouncer asked me for my ID. ” This is kid friendly ?” i said. The
bouncer nodded his head and we walked in. The music was so loud that
the unborn child I am currently housing began to to summersaults in my
belly. There was a football field sized sand ” beach” with several bar
areas, some serving what I was told to be good burgers, and plenty of
picnic tables. There was also a tented dance floor area where the music
was coming from. The girls headed straight for the dance floor to stand
on the sidelines and watch in amazement at the dancers who were
sweating it up with some pretty cool moves. There were children
everywhere, babies, toddlers, and pre teens running around playing in
the sand and having a blast. At first the girls were sceptical about
the ability to have fun in such a strange place where adults and
children alike were dancing and partying together, but they came
around. By the end of our stay they had hooked up with a boy their age
and were playing football in the sand. Had I not been pregnant, I would
have had a beer, but instead I sat at a picnic table and chilled with
some friends, and a bottled water. All in all it was a tween success. I
was able to supervise them while they exercied their new found sense of
” leave me the hell alone”.
