Fun with Chinese Characters
Fun with Chinese Characters makes foreign language acquisition easy and natural. We use creative dramatics, storytelling and music to teach Chinese in a way that keeps kids active and engaged. Fun with Chinese Characters was founded on the principle that the best way to learn a new language, especially one that isn’t spoken at home, is to play – ideally, as a family. Through play we develop the confidence, awareness of others and freedom of expression that supports a child’s natural curiosity, which is at the heart of meaningful education. Our mission is to teach Chinese and encourage a playful, creative attitude towards learning.
After warming up, students will learn the day’s core vocabulary while playing theatre games. We then expand on that vocabulary through storytelling and creative dramatics as the facilitator narrates a scene from one of China’s many folktales. Using English and Chinese the facilitator encourages students take on roles by dressing up, improvise movement and using Chinese words to create a “performance.” As the semester progresses the tale moves forward as students gain experience in creative dramatics and build vocabulary and sentence structure. At the end of each course, the class performs the story. For younger children, we use toys and imaginative play, dress up, songs and rhymes to build language skills. While we are initially focused mainly on the spoken word, as proficiency increases, character recognition and writing are incorporated into lessons.
Each course includes a cd for you to keep, access to a collection of dvds that can be borrowed for at-home reinforcement and a final performance.
